Are Whey Protein Safe?

Whey protein comes from curdling milk in the cheese-making process. As we know, milk contains mainly two types of proteins, which are casein and whey. Certain enzymes are added by the manufacturers to milk, which curdles the milk and leaves it back whey in liquid form.

There are various types of whey proteins such as isolates, concentrates and hydrolysates. Isolates contain about 90% protein and very little lactose and fat content. When choosing a whey protein, you can choose among these types and various flavours that are available in the market.

Whey protein is interestingly used in many infant formulas. In the growing years of the baby, protein is one of the most important macronutrients required for bone strength and muscle growth along with carbs and fats. Make sure to include at least one serving of whey protein in the child's meal per day. As they engage in games and other types of physical activities, supplement their meals with a bit of extra protein.

It is generally safe for most people to take as long as they are not lactose intolerant. Even then, some of the drawbacks of taking whey protein are as follows:


· Calorie content: Though it doesn't have too many carbs or fats, it still has calories. And any food item that contains calories when taken in excess


· Added sugar and preservatives: To maintain the freshness of the whey protein, the manufacturers add various preservatives. And a little sugar never hurt anybody, right? Wrong! The more simple sugars consumed the higher will be the spike in blood sugar. Hence, whey protein if consumed by diabetics in excess may lead to the worsening of their symptoms in the long run.


· Contaminants: Unlike foods and drinks, protein supplements do not have a strict regulatory body to maintain a set standard. They may contain various fillers or heavy metal contaminants to increase the net weight of the final product. Always read the ingredients label carefully before buying any brand's whey protein.


· Digestive problems: Some people experience diarrhea, constipation or nausea when they consume whey protein in excess. So, take care not to have too much whey protein at a time.

Whey protein is an incredible supplement with multiple benefits for athletes as well as bodybuilders. It helps mitigate various injuries, wounds and muscle tears, A little more protein never hurt anybody. Well, not as too much of anything can be of detriment. The same goes for whey protein. It is especially not recommended for those who are lactose intolerant as whey protein is a milk derivative.

Along with a host of health benefits, comes a variety of risks associated with consuming whey protein in excess. This includes excess calorie content, added sugar, too many preservatives, various fillers and possible heavy metal contaminants. It has also been seen that those who consume whey protein in excess can have digestive issues.

Hence, whey protein must be consumed in moderation to reap its maximum benefits without suffering through any of its potential side effects as illustrated.
